Greyton, the Jewel of the Overberg, lies at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountains 6 km east of Genadendal. This quaint, rather olde-world-English village was once the site of an old rambling farm, Weltevreden (“well content”). Today it is a peaceful town that is a fashionable retreat for city dwellers and home to one of the most sought after private schools in the country.
There are many historic buildings that have been lovingly restored and residents maintain gorgeous gardens that are fed by “lei-water” furrows. The broad Riviersonderend river flows on the outskirts of the town and is ideal for rambling along. For the more adventurous the Greyton Nature Reserve on the steep slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains has walks through the 22 hectares of mountain fynbos to waterfalls in a nearby gorge. Buck, such as the Klipspringer and Grey Rheebok are a common site on these interesting paths. The famous Boesmanskloof Trail joins Greyton and McGregor through the mountains.
Greyton also has scenic horse riding trails, a 25 km mountain bike trail and a short 4 x 4 trail. Fishing and canoeing can be enjoyed in the Riviersonderend River and one can also camp on the banks of the river.
The Old Cape Highway (historic wagon route) with oak trees and poplars indicating overnight stops for wagons leads you to the town of Riviersonderend via the hamlet of Lindeshof.
