We arrived in Greyton on a Friday night after the far-too-short drive from Cape Town; the 90-minute journey inland after work flew by along with the rolling scenery of the N2. Cruising slowly into Greyton to celebrate a friend's wedding for what was also our first trip to the little town that snuggles the Riviersonderend Mountain range, we turned into The Posthouse. Greeted by friendly and helpful staff - a constant characteristic of our stay - we were shown to our room.
It was to be one of about 16 joined bungalows built around the property, across the lawn from the dining hall, a carpeted en-suite room with small balcony.
The plush single room with antique furniture was equipped with the goodies that you need when you're away on the weekend, like a hairdryer and tea tray with kettle and coffee. I really appreciated the bathroom with a large shower and tall rainwater showerhead, under which I could stand upright. At full blast it feels like you're under a waterfall, what a pleasure.
A work-filled week and good night out with friends was the perfect recipe for a late morning lie-in. And Nicole did just that while I got up and set out for a morning jog down town. Following a local recommendation I headed to the Boesmanskloof hiking trail just outside of town, and reaching the Riviersonderend Nature Reserve I followed the footpath for a way. The late, clear Autumn dawn in Greyton is a sight to behold as the mountains lose their ruggedness and are painted by the dense golden light.
Another glorious shower and it was time to visit the Saturday market. After hunting through the second-hand book stall for a Terry Pratchett or two I found myself joining the pancake queue. The 'eat where the locals eat' rule could not have been better followed and I recommend that you try one with lemon curd topping too.
After a deliciously lazy lunch at Via's Deli we headed back to The Posthouse for the main event of the weekend, the wedding of two friends.
The lawn between the rooms and the dining hall had been beautifully staged and nothing quiet beats the convenience of being able to get out of the shower (I couldn't resist), opening the room door and being at the wedding.
The fun and festivities took us inside later for succulent lamb on the spit and after the speeches we headed out to the dance hall and bonfire. The few number of steps back to the room was very welcome.
Greyton is a welcoming country town and one to which I'll return, especially to see what's on the other side of those golden mountain slopes along the Boesmanskloof hiking trail.
