The Kogelberg Nature Reserve is known as the ‘floristic heart’ of the globally significant Cape Floral Kingdom. The reserve possibly has the highest levels of plant species richness and endemism in the entire fynbos biome. Towns like Botrivier, Bettys Bay, Hangklip, and Grabouw lie in the KBNR. Recognising its global significance, and after an extensive public participation process South Africa made an application to the Man and the Biosphere (MaB) Programme of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to have the nature reserve and its surrounding area registered as part of the international network of biosphere reserves
